I've wanted to visit a rodeo for some time. I learned to ride from my dad. He thought it was important. I then shot a film where they needed a rider. So it went. I wanted to not confuse my system into thinking riding was "WHite". I mentioned to several friends I wanted to visit the Bill Pickett Rodeo, a 4th generation rodeo named after William Pickett, a famous texas cowboy and rodeo performer born in 1870.

I went with two siblings. It's important to share these moments as not a black exception but a black slice of American tradition—one that highlights that we have, in fact, neve not been around.
